The confrontation between Barcelona and Getafe.
The Spanish Civil War had just ended, and professional football was back in business in the early 1940s. However, there were still many team owners who were supporters of the fascist cause. As a result, several important matches were suspended due to violence by the fascist supporters. On the other hand, supporters from the republican side were less violent during their football games. These games resumed in 1942 with no more suspensions due to violence.
The confrontation between Barcelona and Getafe in 1934 is a good example of how the sport returned after the civil war but with many serious underlying issues.
On 19 August 1942, La Liga resumed play with a match between Real Madrid and Deportivo de la Coruna. The match was interrupted multiple times due to violence between the rival fans; this resulted in it being suspended after 70 minutes. Two days later, Real Madrid hosted FC Barcelona in an important league match. The stadium was filled with Barcelona supporters wearing their signature red shirts and blue trousers. At half time, Barca was up 3-0 against Depor, so the fans started leaving early. This resulted in a suspension of both games after 28 players dropped out due to excessive violence by Real Madrid fans.
Barcelona won the first game of their winning streak against Getafe by a score of 12-0 on 26 August 1942. The game resumed on 5 September with Getafe hosting Barcelona in front of 40 thousand fans at Coliseum Alfonso XIII. The first half was relatively tame as both teams tried to get used to playing again following the civil war. However, in the second half there was a huge spike in violence between both teams as getsafans threw bottles and rocks at Barcelona players. Fans from both sides engaged in fierce hand-to-hand combat before security broke up the fight and suspended play for 30 minutes. Then play finally resumed as fans threw more bottles onto the pitch and at players on both sides. Eventually, police arrested everyone in attendance and closed down the stadium for further safety concerns.
The 1934 confrontation between Barcelona and Getafe is considered to be one of the most violent games ever played- not only in Spanish football history but worldwide as well. It began with an away win for Barcelona on 22 August 1934 by a score of 7-3 at Coliseum Alfonso XIII. Getafe's fans were especially angry since they felt that their players had been unfairly criticized by Barcelona players and coaches throughout the season. When both teams entered the stadium that day, they faced off against each other with stones and clubs before entering the stadium. After each side warmed up inside their own part of the stadium, they would meet outside to start roughing each other up before entering the stadium proper. Because of this unsanctioned violent preparation beforehand, it is no wonder that such massive amounts of violence erupted once both teams entered Coliseum Alfonso XIII for real that day.
Resuming professional football following a seven-year span of civil war proved difficult for Spain because of lingering issues that had not been properly resolved even prior to playing again for public consumption. Both fans and players were eager but also untrained following such an emotional period that saw so many die over conflicting political ideologies regarding which side should run Spain? Despite these hurdles, football still proved to be popular among Spaniards during this time period despite being hampered by such issues as violence in stadiums. The confrontation between Barcelona and Getafe in 1934 is a good example of how the sport returned after the civil war but with many serious underlying issues.
