Odegaard is "incredible" in his ability to help Arsenal win the title.
As the Norwegian midfielder finally realizes the promise he displayed as a young wonderkid, Martin Odegaard is driving Arsenal's surprise run for the Premier League championship.
Sunday's match between table-toppers Arsenal and Manchester United will feature Odegaard in the spotlight in a glamorous match that should have been his birthright. Odegaard, who was hailed as the most talented kid of his generation, made his senior debut with Stromsgodset in 2014 at the age of 15 and later that year became the youngest player in Norway history.
In 2015, after considering a number of offers, he decided to sign with Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid, making him the club's youngest player ever at the age of 16 years and 157 days.
But he found it difficult to live up to the hype in the harsh Madrid spotlight and was often loaned out. Odegaard's brief stints in relative obscurity at Heerenveen, Vitesse Arnhem, and Real Sociedad raised concerns that he might not live up to his early promise, but when Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta sent him out on loan for the second half of the 2020–21 campaign, the player was thrust back into the spotlight.
Even then, it was believed that Real's choice to sell him to the Gunners for roughly £30 million in 2021 was proof that he would not be a success at the top level. Odegaard has grasped his opportunity in the Premier League despite the necessity for a massive career reset. Odegaard, who Arteta appointed as the captain of Arsenal before the current campaign, has repaid his coach's trust by becoming a key player in the club's ascent to the top of the Premier League.
In 17 league games this season, the 24-year-old has already tallied eight goals and five assists. Odegaard concluded the previous year with seven goals and four assists in the league, putting his breakout campaign into context.
